The STAR CLASS Racing Club met again today for our second event from The Sail & Chill Club at Agrettes Isles. We confused some of our sailors today by having the pre-race briefing at the Club and then sailing four sims south to the Anse Etoile race line. The line worked well - it's a LONNNNNG race line so lots of room - and eventually all of our racers got underway for the first race on the STAR-AE-HammerHead course. Two boats didn't have race wind and there was a DSQ for missing a mark, but only one DNF from a lost boat. Daenerys had a great line around Mark 2 and caught Ultramantra. They were still really close at the top of the downwind, but Ultra missed the wind shadow opportunity and let Daenerys off the hook. Viv, meanwhile, sailed off to a comfortable, but declining lead in front of the charging Dae.

The second race - the reverse version of the HammerHead - saw nine boats start with very little lag. This was a downwind start which the racers took in their stride, all converging on the first Mark but getting around cleanly, despite the nearby sim border. At the top of the upwind leg, Viv, Dae and Phil were all within about six boat lengths for a great race at the front. The joy of these courses is the long upwind leg with six or maybe even eight tacks meaning there are lots of crossing boats, so to see the lead three so close was a real joy. Dae once again gained around Mark 2 and took the lead from Viv, holding it to the finish, giving her the overall win for the day ... and another trophy for her collection.

Congratulations Daenerys!

Thanks for 2 fun races, although once I got clear ahead on the beat, that 1st race lost a bit of interest. It became a question of managing my advance...

The second race was much more enjoyable for me, even though I eventually lost to Dae.

It started all wrong though: Despite being first or second on the line, I think every single boat passed me between the start and the 1st buoy ! I was not moving, with sails totally off... lag and the fleet wind shadow had me glued to the start, ahaha (mostly lag, I think - see next) !

But, once I got around the buoy, I managed to sail up the ranks swiftly... The Star doesn't seem too affected by wind shadow from what I experienced then.

I managed to get clear of the pack, and caught up with Dae... We had several close crosses, unfortunately not close enough when I was starboard... Eventually I was in position to pass ahead, but she was starboard and I had to duck behind her... However, I was then above the layline while she had another couple tacks to do and I rounded the mark (buoy mark #1) one boat length ahead of Dae.

Star races - Closer, but not quite there yet..

My lead would be short lived though: Congrats to Dae for her nice move at the mark #2 around the 1st island, taking the inside and letting me fight with the double simcross (yep, once over across, then once back). With this finely executed turn, she took off, never letting me back close enough to hope shadowing her on the run.

Again, same as in race 1, Dae proved slightly faster on the run, until I found my stride in the last 2 sims to the line. But it was too late ;-)

2 Thumbs Up for Viv's report here!! I love reading about the racers personal perspective from a race. We as RD's try to keep the 'Helicopter View' on the whole race missing out on the little details as explained above. Thank you so much Viv!! :D

And here is a nice picture of Daenerys a.k.a. The Trophy Collector posing with her new addition to her collection ;)
