Sunday 7th of January, 7am SLT
SLIFF Clubhouse, Skagway
RACE RESULTS

What a great start of the new year: 10 Bandit IFs lined up at the pre-start. So we defied SL and went for a 3-race Regatta. Starting with SLIFF-03, followed by SLIFF-07 and to end SLIFF-02. Wind was blowing at 15 kts, heading 200°. Our racers were very eager, so it wasn't a surprise I had to penalize a few for not giving Right of Way, but far more important: everyone sure had fun, despite the lag with 10 Bandits raising sails at the start.

Below are today's results:

Attendees: Gabs, Soh & Milky, Tay, Henry, Macz, Red & Daene, Jimi, Moon, Alice and Jackson

* Wooot Macz, that was an exciting downwind leg. You proved once more that the veterans still can do it!. But all over the field we saw great battles. Pity Jimi got punished hard for obstructing Macz - SL made him crash while performing his 360° penalty turn.

after doing the math we got the following final result:

 1 - Moon
 2 - Alice
 3 - Macz
 4 - Red
 5 - Jimi
 6 - Jack
 7- Soh
 8 - Tay
 9 - Henry
10 - Gabs

So WELL DONE to all of today's racers and winners! It was again a joy to watch. And well done to Moon for taking the gold today!

Join us next Sunday at 7 am at SLIFF for some more awesome racing !

Margo, I think you've got the times mixed up - the first two races are the same set of results, and the third race ... well, I'm sure I won that one  ;)

But it was a great day's racing - having a fleet of ten IF's racing together in the Blake Passage is almost worth the lag issues lol.

Hmmm .... still missing the result of the third race, the important one when that veteran you mentioned showed these new kids the old tricks  ;)

PS: I've pulled the race times from the chat log in case you're missing one of them ... easily done on a busy RD day.

Edit: Hey guess what, I can edit THIS post but not my previous one. What are the post editing rules?

Not that it matters much but what system is used to calculate the final result?

I'd assume that Margo used the low score system, dropping the worst of the three results. I think no matter what system was used, Moon would justifiable come out in front for being Mr Consistency with three second places.

I know I'm to much of a "rules" person so I'll just note that Appendix A is not used (1/2 and 7/8) and leave it with that  ;)

Alice, I think you must be reading a different Appendix A to the one I've got (RRS 2017-2020) which states in A4 that "The Low Point System will apply unless the notice of race or sailing instructions specify another system". Therefore Appendix A is being used - we use the Low Point System because we don't state otherwise.

But please explain what "1/2 and 7/8" refers to so I can avoid reading the rules book yet again. I'm confused  :(

A8 SERIES TIES

A8.1 If there is a series-score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.
A8.2 If a tie remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

By 8.1 A series score of place 1 and 3 ranks higher then 2 and 2 (in our case for placing 1 and 2)
And by 8.2 if there still is a tie the last race decides ranking (in our case for the placings of 7 and 8 in the total) (and as I discovered just now placings 3 and 4)

As I've said I don't do this "to be right" but to understand the rules.

Ok Alice, you're ABSOLUTELY right and ought to have been credited as the overall winner. I misunderstood your original question and hadn't looked into the actual results we celebrated, but now that I do I see we got it wrong.

Now the ball's in your court - can you write us a clever spreadsheet to do these calculations for us? The RD, by the end of four races, is already running on reserves and then there's the pressure to do clever things with finishing places to work out where ties break before everyone starts to disappear... HELP!

Here is a free program that does it all and is very much in use in RL.  May take a bit to set it up with what information you want to use and show but it is very automated after that.  I've used it a few times in SL but to be honest most of our races are only three events and usually under 12 or so skippers so I find a pencil and paper just as fast under most circumstances.

Macz, I can definitely do that. I already use the Sailwave program Justin is mentioning for the total score I've done.
And I'll be happy to help if You want.

I've downloaded it, now just have to work out how to use it quickly between races. Look VERY useful!

Thanks AGAIN Justin  :)

And Alice, we might just have to give you an official title at SLIFF!
